Nepal- Massive Earthquake Leaves a Path of Death and Destruction
Nepal: A massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck 77 kilometers (48 miles) northwest of Nepal’s capital Kathmandu at 0611 GMT on 25 April, 2015 toppling office blocks and towers and killing hundreds of people. More than two dozen people were also reported killed in neighboring India, China and Bangladesh. (AFP, April 25th, 2015)
As of April 27th, the Government of Nepal reported 3,351 deaths and 6,833 injured people. These numbers are expected to increase further as search and rescue teams reach remote areas. Most of the deaths are recorded in Bhaktapur, Kathmandu and Lalitpur. 8 million people in 39 districts have been affected, of which over 2 million people live in the 11 severely affected districts. Disaster Aid USA working together with our International Rotary Club Partners (Disaster Aid Australia, Disaster Aid UK/Ireland and Disaster Aid Malaysia) are busy gathering information in preparation for its deployment to Nepal with desperately needed Shelter, clean Water, and other solutions to ease the pain and suffering to those people in desperate need of aid.
In areas affected (30 out of 75 districts) many properties have been raised to the ground or are inhabitable. Many buildings in built up areas are leaning and believed to be vulnerable to aftershocks. Local advice given on Nepal national radio is to stay well clear of these structures and remain outdoors. Schools have been made into makeshift shelter centers but the majority of people are sleeping outside.
Disaster Aid USA together with our International Rotary Club Partners will deliver the aid you have provided with your donation.
